The Plaza de Armas:
Spanish
conqueror Pedro de Valdivia traced out the city of Santiago from
the Plaza de Armas in 1541. The area was occupied, at that period,
by the Church, the Real Audiencia (Law Court), the Cabildo (City
Hall), the prision and few residences.
Today it is possible to see these and many others buildings which
are faithful reflections of that period, such as La Municipalidad
(The County Hall) , Central Postal Office, the Palacio de la Real
Audiencia and the Cathedral (all they are National Monument. "Plaza
de Armas" metro station, line 5).
The Civic Center:
The
Government House was built in neo-classical style by architect Joaquín
Toesca to house the Royal Mint, and was the largest building erected
by the Spanish Crown in the colonies during the 18th century.
Since year 2000, has been opened to the public as a symbol of increased
opennes. ("La Moneda" metro station, line 1).
Municipal
Theatre:
For the opera, ballet or classic music lovers, the Municipal Theatre
offers events from March to December. it was inaugurated on 17th
September of 1857, with the opera "Ernani" of Giuseppe
Verdi. In 1974, the Municipal Theater of Santiago, was declared
National Monument ("Santa Lucía" metro station,
line 1).

Precolombian Art Museum
This museum show the history
of american civilitations and its art with a collection with more
than 3000 pieces. Some ofthe most outstanding objects are ceramics
and textiles ("Plaza de Armas" metro station, line 5). |
